The DG for Research and Innovation from the European Commission published on January 2021 a Policy Brief called: Industry 5.0 – Towards a sustainable, human-centric, and resilient European Industry.

This report puts forward a coherent vision for the future of European Industry, showing the power of industry to achieve societal goals beyond jobs and growth to become a resilient provider of prosperity, by making production respect the boundaries of our planet and placing the well-being of the industry worker at the center of the production process. This report defines the concept of Industry 5.0, it also dives into the main benefits for the worker, as well as for the industry, and provides an overview of ongoing and finalised research and innovation projects.

Industry 5.0 complements the existing Industry 4.0 paradigm by highlighting research and innovation as drivers for a transition to a sustainable, human-centric and resilient European industry. It moves focus from shareholder to stakeholder value, with benefits for all concerned. Industry 5.0 attempts to capture the value of new technologies, providing prosperity beyond jobs and growth, while respecting planetary boundaries, and placing the wellbeing of the industry worker at the centre of the production process.

The report includes the following key findings:

  • The industry in Europe must become the accelerator and enabler of change and innovation.
  • Digitalisation provides the industry with unprecedented opportunities. Developing innovative technologies in a human-centric way can increase the industries’ resilience and make them more sustainable.
  • Industry must incorporate and take a strong leadership role in the Green transition.
  • The transition to Industry 5.0 will require action in a whole range of areas.
